Information to be confirmed on all walks but expect walks to suit all abilities, Family Trails, moderate treks, challening hill walks and an overnight challenge.

Opening Walk - Wild Flowers and Weeds Interpretative walk and Talk

Date: Friday 5th August 2011

Registration & Meeting Point: Newtownstewart Old Bridge

Time:

Distance: 2km / 1.2miles

Duration: 1 - 1.5hrs

Description: Wild Flowers and Weeds.  Exploring magical, medicinal and practical uses of plants in local folklore. Take a walk with us along the river of Newtownstewart and discover a new insight into the habitat along its banks. A short walk and talk.  This walk is also suitable for buggies.

Cost: Voluntary fee in aid of Ulster Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research

Healthy Lifestyle

This year we have also introduced “Healthy Lifestyle” walking options, available at Gortin Glens Forest Park. There will be the choice of self-guided walks and one guided walk per day at 12 Noon.

You can choose from a range of self guided walks, varying in diatance from 1.25 miles, 2.25 miles and 9 miles. Click on the links below to view trail options and maps.

 

The Guided walks is "Ladies View", which is 2.25 miles.

 

 

Road Walking Options coordinated by the Eden Walking Club

The following walks will be led by Eden Walking Club and will take in quiet country roads around the Plumbridge area.

The walks will have a cover charge of £1 per person.

 

Saturday 6th August

 

Section of Butterlope Glen

Registration & Meeting Point: Glenelly Church Car Park on the

Bradkeel Road

Starting Time:

Length of Walk: 4.5 miles

Duration: 1.5 – 2hrs

Quiet country roads

 

Sunday 7th August

Section of

Craignamaddy Route

Registration & Meeting Point:: Barnes Gap Car Park

Starting Time:

Length of Walk: 6 miles

Duration: 1.5 – 2hrs

 

These walks are all on road and do not require full hill walking gear however walking boots would be advisable although not essential depending on weather.

 

 

Historic Walk - (Suitable for Moderate walking ability and above)

 

WWII Plane Crash Site Walk

Saturday 6th and Monday 8th August

Duration: 1.5hrs

Cost: £5

Description: A walk to view the site where four young men from around the world lost their lives when their aircraft, an Avro Anson Mk1 hit the hillside at Legnagappoge Glen on 6th March 1945. You will also have the opportunity to view the exhibition and see the promotional DVD.

 

 

Moderate Walks

 

Saturday 6th August

Mullaghcarabatagh and Mullaghclogher

Registration and Meeting Point: 9:30am & 10:00am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 10:15am & 10:45am

Elevation: 522m

Distance: 10km/6 miles

Duration: 4.5hrs 

Description: A scenic circular hike over the western edge of the high Sperrins ridge 

 

Sunday 7th August

Carnelly

Registration & Meeting Point: 9:30am & 10:30am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 10:30am & 11:30am

Elevation: 562m

Distance: 9km / 5.5miles

Duration: 4hrs

Description: An interesting circular 9km hike along the hills to the south east of Glenelly.       

 

 

Monday 8th August

Craignamaddy Ridge

Registration & Meeting Point: 10:00am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 10:45am

Elevation: 366m

Distance: 12km / 7.5miles

Duration: 4.5hrs

Description: The route offers stunning views of Glenelly and the Owenkillew Valley. With heather clad hills, tranquil valleys and a rich cultural heritage the Sperrin Mountains await your discovery, returning over the Sperrins ridge.

 

 

 

Challenging Walks

 

Saturday 6th August

The Mullagh’s & Glenelly Valley

Registration and Meeting Point: 9.00am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 9:45am

Distance: 14km / 9miles

Duration: 5.5 – 6hrs

Description: A high level classic starting at Cranagh Village and finishing at Glenroan Bridge in Glenelly Valley.

 

Sunday 7th August

Craig Circuit

Registration and Meeting Point: 10:00am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 

Elevation: 635m

Distance: 12km / 7.5miles

Duration: 5hrs

Description: A circular walk, starting and finishing on mountain track, with the highest point Mullaghclogha (635), which is the second highest point in the Sperrins!

 

 

Monday 8th August

County Rock to Goles Bridge

Registration & Meeting Point: 9:00am, The Parochial Hall, Plumbridge

Walk Starts: 10:00am

Elevation: 627m

Distance: 13km / 8miles

Duration: 5.5hrs

Description: A linear walk from County Rock to Goles bridge, taking in Mullaghaneeny, with some spectacular view along the way.
